Stakeholders in Ibadan have called on the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) to adopt a permanent month and week for the annual Ibadan Week Festival to enhance planning, participation and the global visibility of the cultural celebration.
The proposal, addressed to the President General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Ibadan House, Oke Aremo, Ibadan, noted that the festival’s date currently changes from year to year, a situation which can make it difficult for members, affiliated clubs, guests and other stakeholders to plan ahead.
According to the proponents, fixing a specific period for Ibadan Week every year would provide a reliable framework for long-term planning while strengthening the identity and brand of the festival.
They explained that a permanent date would enable affiliated clubs, members and stakeholders to save the date well in advance, organise their programmes and make adequate arrangements to participate fully in the celebration.
The proposal also stressed that a fixed period would help establish Ibadan Week as a strong and recognisable annual tradition, allowing residents, visitors and Ibadan indigenes in the diaspora to easily associate the designated period with the celebration of the city’s rich culture, heritage and unity.
The proponents further argued that adopting a permanent date could significantly increase participation, particularly among Ibadan indigenes living outside the city and abroad, as they would be able to plan their annual vacations and travel arrangements ahead of time.
They also highlighted the importance of early bookings, noting that venues, keynote speakers, special guests, performers and service providers could be engaged well in advance when the festival date is known ahead of time. This, they said, would reduce last-minute preparations and improve the overall quality and organisation of the event.
Another major benefit identified in the proposal is the opportunity to attract stronger corporate sponsorship. According to the proponents, a fixed annual date would encourage corporate organisations, partners and sponsors to make Ibadan Week part of their yearly budgets and corporate planning.
In view of these benefits, the proponents formally proposed that the second week of May every year be adopted as the permanent period for the annual Ibadan Week Festival.
They expressed confidence that the proposal, if favourably considered by the CCII, would contribute significantly to the growth, prestige and sustainability of Ibadan Week while further promoting the cultural heritage and unity of Ibadan and its people.
The proponents also commended the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes for its continued commitment to the unity, development and promotion of Ibadan and called for favourable consideration of the proposal.
The proposed permanent date is expected to provide members, clubs, stakeholders, sponsors and Ibadan indigenes across the world with a predictable annual window to prepare for and participate in the celebration.
