Commuters over the rising wave of insecurity along the Lekki-Epe Expressway corridor following the tragic death of AbudLateef Jelili Okuwafemi, popularly known as Femi.
According to accounts from associates and eyewitnesses, Femi had just concluded work at Peace Garden Estate, near Emperor Garden, after passing through the Sangotedo axis when he was attacked by unidentified gunmen in broad daylight. The assailants, whose motive remains unclear, reportedly shot him twice in the head before fleeing the scene.
Efforts were immediately made to save his life as he was rushed to Epe General Hospital. However, relatives alleged that he was referred to General Hospital, Lagos Island, for further treatment. Despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilise him, he later succumbed to his injuries and was subsequently buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
Residents say the incident is one of several security-related cases recorded along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in recent times. Many have expressed concern over reported cases of armed robbery and attacks on motorists, particularly during peak traffic periods. Some residents have also questioned what they describe as an inadequate security presence along the corridor, alleging that police patrols and checkpoints are not sufficiently visible in areas where criminal activities are frequently reported.
Community members further recalled that incidents of robbery and violent attacks were reportedly reduced in last three years ago. Some residents have argued that greater attention should be given to security challenges affecting the area, while calling on the current local government administration, security agencies and the Lagos State Government to take urgent steps to address the situation.
Stakeholders are now urging relevant authorities to strengthen security operations, increase patrol presence and implement proactive measures to prevent further attacks and safeguard the lives and property of residents and commuters using the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
